Fluoride treatments are beneficial for both adults and children. In children, fluoride works by hardening the enamel portion of teeth, thereby making the teeth less susceptible to decay. In adults, it helps to reduce temperature sensitivity along the root surfaces of teeth - a common problem in middle-aged patients.

Fluoride is usually applied to the teeth in the form of flavored foam. This material remains in contact with the teeth for approximately one minute. Fluoride foam is most often used shortly after a patient's teeth are cleaned by the dental hygienist. Fluoride foams are available in several different flavors that kids really like.


Some adult and adolescent patients with either very sensitive teeth or a large amount of decay can benefit from home fluoride gels prescribed by the dentist. These are more powerful than the typical fluoride rinses found at a drug store or supermarket. They sometimes require a custom-fitted tray similar to a bleaching appliance, and are effective.
