Intraoral cameras are tiny cameras-about the size of a pencil eraser-that are hooked up to a hand-held wand. When the tip of the wand is aimed inside your mouth, we can obtain miraculously clear photos of your teeth and gums. Sometimes, these pictures help us identify a certain problem condition in your mouth, like a cracked tooth or a broken filling. More frequently though, these cameras are used to help us show patients a problem they may have with their own teeth. It's so much easier to see a tooth when it's projected onto a television screen in front of you than in a foggy mirror. These cameras can help us uncover hidden problems in your mouth, by illuminating and enlarging certain areas that are just too small to see unmagnified.
