What Modern Dental Tech Does for You

Times have notably changed. Advancements in dental technology have revolutionized treatment efficiency while enhancing the patient experience. You might even say that they’ve made dental visits more inviting than ever before.

Modern Dentistry: CBCT
Proper dental care requires a comprehensive view of your teeth to assess their current structure and health. Dental Cone Beam Computed Topography (CBCT) allows us to obtain “cone beam” images of the mouth for much greater insight. A single scan can produce 3D images of the teeth, bone, nerve pathways and surrounding soft tissue.
We can use CBCT scans to plan treatment for implant placement, identify canal anatomy for root canals, recognize fractures in roots and teeth, and spot certain types of oral cancer, to name but a few important capabilities for our patients in Oswego, Yorkville, Boulder Hill, Plainfield, Montgomery, Aurora or North Aurora .
Modern Dentistry: Digital Impressions
Anyone who’s had a crown made years ago likely remembers the runny, gooey, bitter material used for the tooth impression with a mold. Those days are long gone.
We now use technology with a special camera that lets us digitally photograph and transfer images of teeth in three dimensions. We also can print 3D models of them. This leads to quicker, easier and more precise development of dental solutions such as crowns, bridges, implants, bite guards and clear orthodontic trays.
Modern Dentistry: Digital X-Rays
We no longer use traditional x-rays at Oswego Dental Group. New technology allows us to digitize dental images so we can view them on a computer screen instead of on a tiny film.
Where traditional x-rays degrade and lose their quality over time, digital x-rays can be stored in a computer server and remain unchanged with time. They also can be enhanced, similar to how you would touch up a digital-camera photo. The image can be made lighter or darker or adjusted in different ways to help us better interpret the image.
Digital x-rays also require only a fraction of the already low amount of radiation needed for traditional x-rays.
Modern Dentistry: Intraoral Cameras
Our onsite technology includes new intraoral cameras that can detect certain types of tooth decay. The cameras use a filtered LED light to illuminate decay by making it fluoresce. This can often reveal small cavities starting in surface enamel: something traditional x-rays can’t do.
Modern Dentistry: Diagnostic Laser
Lasers can be modified to treat dental conditions without causing pain or affecting healthy tissue.
One of lasers’ newer applications is quick and painless diagnostic testing. Our DIAGNOdent system applies a low-energy laser beam to detect tooth decay that in the past would have been invisible to us. As the laser illuminates the tooth’s small grooves and crevices, it measures the light reflected inside the tooth. It can then read the reflected light to tell us if a suspicious-looking tooth has a simple stain or a genuine cavity.
A diode laser lets us remove bothersome canker sores instantly and painlessly. It also can be used for certain surgical procedures with faster recovery times and no bleeding, as well as for treating early-stage gum disease.

Advancements in modern dentistry allow us to include biocompatible and natural-looking materials in restoring and maintaining healthy teeth.
For many years, dentists had to use mercury amalgam (silver-colored) fillings for cavities. While silver fillings remain today, dental patients also can opt for composite fillings that are durable, mercury-free and matching with their teeth.
As you can see, modern dental technology makes huge leaps in pain management, lasting and informative imagery, accurate and quick diagnoses, and more-precise, less-invasive procedures – all while widening patients’ choices of treatment.
