Endodontics (Root Canal)

The inside of a tooth includes a soft tissue called pulp, which is beneath the tooth’s white enamel and a hard layer called dentin. The pulp contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue that aid the growth of the tooth root as the tooth develops. Once a tooth is fully formed, it can survive without the pulp because surrounding tissues continue to nourish it.
Sometimes bacteria can enter the pulp and cause a dental abscess indicated by the symptoms above. When the tooth is infected, endodontic treatment (a root canal) is needed to save it.
Oswego Dental Group specializes in root-canal procedures that remove the infected pulp, clean and disinfect the inner tooth’s surfaces, and re-seal the tooth to prevent new infection.
Endodontics (Root Canal): Procedure
According to the American Association of Endodontists, more than 15 million teeth are saved by endodontic treatment each year (app. 41,100 procedures per day), giving patients comfort from pain while restoring dental health.
A root-canal procedure by Oswego Dental Group is both safe and effective. It is similar to that for a routine filling and can often be completed in one or two visits.
Before beginning the process, we will first take X-rays of the infected tooth to determine the extent of the damage and the proper treatment for the tooth. Next steps will then include the following.
Anesthesia. We will administer a local anesthesia to the affected tooth and the surrounding gums. Many root canals also include general anesthesia.
Dental dam placement. A small rubber dam is placed over the affected area to isolate the tooth and keep it dry during the procedure.
Access hole. A small opening is made in the crown of the tooth so that we can access the pulp.
Pulp removal. We will use tiny instruments to remove the nerves, blood vessels and tissues from the tooth.
Canal shaping. With the pulp removed, we will clean, disinfect and shape the pulp chamber and root canals.
Canal filling. Once the canals are empty, we fill them with a flexible, rubbery dental material known as gutta-percha.
Tooth sealing. A temporary dental filling is placed to seal the tooth and protect it from new bacteria.
Final restoration. Many root canals require a custom dental crown to protect the treated tooth and restore the bite. These custom crowns typically take two to three weeks to complete. When the crown is ready, we remove the temporary filling and place the permanent crown.
Because of the anesthesia, a root canal is typically no less comfortable than getting a filling.
Endodontics (Root Canal): Post-Procedure
The tooth may be mildly numb, sore or sensitive for a short time after the treatment. Most important, the former pain will be relieved because the source of infection has been removed.
