Oswego Dental Group supports proactive detection, prevention and management of tooth decay with a state-of-the-art DIAGNOdent InGaAsP laser (low-power indium gallium arsenide phosphide laser).
The DIAGNOdent laser is a powerful tool in our ability to identify and treat cavities to help patients maintain their best oral health.
DIAGNOdent Laser to Treat Cavities
Our painless dental laser to treat cavities uses laser light to locate any decay with greater precision and timing. It is far more accurate than traditional methods of visual inspection and probing with a dental pick, which may miss tiny cavities in tight grooves or between teeth.
DIAGNOdent Laser: How It Works
Held against the tooth, the painless laser shines harmless, low-intensity light onto its surface.
Healthy enamel will consistently reflect the laser light.
Decayed or weakened tooth areas will scatter or absorb the light differently.
Measuring the light response, the device provides a digital reading that helps us find hidden or very early cavities.
DIAGNOdent Laser: Advantages
The dental laser treatment spots any decay that might still be too small for detection, including on x-rays.
The non-invasive laser requires no poking or scraping – only scanning.
By providing us with superb accuracy, it reduces dental guesswork.
The DIAGNOdent laser really is painless – you don’t feel a thing!
It’s easy to see how the laser can make dental visits more comfortable for patients such as children and those who feel nervous about going to the dentist.
Because it is so accurate, the dental laser treatment also reduces the need for extra radiation through x-rays. This further allows us to track small areas of concern without having to address the tooth right away. We can better monitor it so we know when the best time to treat it will be.
The early detection of cavities helps lead to smaller, easier and less-expensive dental treatments such as larger fillings or root canals.
Dental Laser Treatment: Beyond Detecting Cavities
Laser technology in dentistry further can be used to make other procedures quicker, less invasive and less uncomfortable than they had ever been before.
For example, using a diode laser, dentists can:
reshape or remove gum tissue during cavity treatment or crown placement
in some cases, disinfect a cavity or periodontal pocket to further reduce bacteria before a filling is placed
instantly and painlessly remove troublesome canker sores
perform certain dental surgeries with no bleeding and quicker recovery times
diagnose and treat early-stage gum disease
Cavities: Still Pervasive to Treat
Cavities remain a notable problem in the U.S.
About 91% of American adults have had cavities.
About 20% of American adults currently have untreated cavities.
Children
Ages 2–5 years: About 11% have at least one untreated cavity in their primary (baby) teeth.
6–8: Nearly 18% have untreated decay in primary teeth.
6–9: About 50% have had cavities in either primary or permanent teeth.
Adolescents 12–19 years
Around 10% have at least one untreated cavity in their permanent teeth.
Adults 20–64 years
Approximately 20% have at least one untreated cavity.
Seniors 65 & older
About 96% have had cavities in their permanent teeth.
Cavities remain prevalent because of factors such as the following.
High-sugar, high-carb American diets
Our diets are packed with sugary foods and refined carbohydrates (e.g. soda, candy, white bread, fast food). That sugar feeds our mouth’s bacteria, which produce acid, which wears away tooth enamel. Plus, because many of us snack throughout the day, especially on starchy or sugary foods, the bacteria remain well nourished. Frequent sipping of soda, energy drinks or coffee with sugar or sweetened cream keeps acid levels high in the mouth as well.
Inconsistent dental care
Many Americans simply don’t visit the dentist often enough for a check-up. Skipping cleanings and check-ups can allow small cavities to become big ones and enable other dental issues to go further unnoticed.
Lack of preventive dental hygiene
Not all people brush at least once daily with fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps prevent early decay. Flossing is equally important. Without regular flossing, decay between teeth can be encouraged.
Dry mouth (Xerostomia)
Our saliva helps protect our teeth. A low saliva level can promote tooth decay. Dry mouth can have different causes, such as from medications, medical conditions, snoring or mouth breathing, dehydration, or tobacco, alcohol or recreational drug use.
Cavities: More Than a Tooth Problem
The complications of cavities can involve more than the mouth. They can also impose on our physical health.
Cavities: Impact on Dental Health
Tooth destruction: Cavities eat the tooth enamel and dentin, leading to holes, cracks and weakened teeth.
Pain and sensitivity: When decay reaches the tooth’s inner pulp, it can induce sharp pain, throbbing or extreme sensitivity, especially when eating.
Infection and abscesses: A deep cavity can seriously infect the inner tooth, leading to a dental abscess (a pocket of pus) that can spread further if not treated.
Tooth loss: Severe decay can ravage a tooth and require its removal.
Gum damage: Deep infections can affect nearby gums and even jawbone structures, leading to periodontal (gum) disease.
Cavities: Impact on Physical Health
Systemic infection: An untreated tooth infection can spread to the bloodstream, resulting in sepsis, which a life-threatening condition requiring emergency care.
Heart problems: Bacteria from infected teeth can enter the bloodstream and cause endocarditis, an infection of the heart’s inner lining.
Diabetes complications: People with diabetes are more vulnerable to oral infections, and poor dental health can worsen blood-sugar control.
Respiratory infections: Inhaling bacteria from infected teeth and gums can lead to pneumonia or worsen existing lung conditions.
Pregnancy risks: Poor dental health, including untreated cavities, is linked to pre-term birth and low birth weight in babies.
Nutritional issues: Tooth pain makes it harder to chew, leading to poor diet choices, malnutrition or weight loss, especially among seniors and kids.
For all of these reasons, early cavity detection with our DIAGNOdent laser combined with regular dental cleanings can contribute notably to overall quality of life and well-being.

When my dentist of many years retired, I knew I would have to find another one to replace him. I had a “fear” of dentists, and I didn’t want to just randomly call another one. I searched online and read many, many reviews of other dentists, but I kept coming back to the Oswego Dental Group. The reviews were all five stars, and I thought to myself if even HALF the reviews are accurate, I’ll start there. But I wasn’t in a hurry…….who actually loves going to the dentist? I didn’t! Then I cracked a tooth a few weeks ago and knew I had to get it taken care of. I called Oswego Dental Group to set up an appointment on 2/25 and they fit me in on 2/26. From the moment I walked into the building until I left an hour and a half later, I realized the reviews I’d read were 100% spot on! I’m not familiar enough with everyone there to know all their names yet, but the dental assistant I had was absolutely wonderful in every possible way. Her sense of professionalism mixed with light hearted humor put me at ease immediately. Dr. MacDonald was the same ~ very professional, but with a good mix of humor, too. He checked out the tooth that I’d cracked and explained everything clearly to me. I walked out of there with a temporary crown on my tooth while a new one is being made. For someone who was once fearful of dentists, I have zero hesitation or concern of returning to Oswego Dental Group in a few weeks for the final crown to be put on my tooth. I was warmly greeted by staff members the moment I walked in the door, and felt the same sense of caring until the moment left. We had a wonderful experience with Dr Milazzo and Ann. I called to ask for a consultation and got an appointment the next morning. Upon arriving we were greeted and shown to the back. My husband (70 yrs old) had a baby tooth that needed to be pulled but he is on blood thinners and has an LVAD (heart pump) and we always encounter people not wanting to help him because of his medical condition. But Dr Milazzo and his assistant Ann were like a breath of fresh air! They took great care of my husband and he got in there and pulled the tooth without a problem. It was amazing to be in a dentist office with such caring kind professional’s. We have found our dentist.

I have been a dental patient at the Oswego Dental Group for nearly 15 years and have always been very happy with the care that I have received. Dr MacDonald and all of the hygienists I have ever had are fantastic people and do a great job on my teeth! Love coming here!

I love going to my dentist! For 13 years I have never been disappointed and I greatly appreciate how personable and kind the Hygenists have always been! Today my visit was with Pam. I appreciate the time she took to ask how My family and I were going. Dr, MacDonald also took the time to explain a small upcoming procedure I would be having and in doing so put my doubts at ease! Best dentist experience. Everyone from the receptionist to Dr Milazzo and Dr Macdonald are very friendly. Pam is an amazing dental hygienist. She is absolutely fantastic. Extremely thorough and friendly. I’m sure everyone is great as well but I’ve only had the pleasure of having my teeth cleaned by Pam and have no need to search elsewhere. Thanks everyone at Oswego Dental Group for making my dental visit a good one.
